Traveling to Ireland: When to Visit & What to Do

I’ve been deep in planning mode, crafting a dream itinerary for a client who’s about to experience the very best of this incredible country. It’s truly reigniting my own passion for its charm✨.

Imagine the iconic rolling green hills of Ireland, a landscape that truly invites you to pause and appreciate the moment. Then, consider the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, where the raw power of nature is on full display. Ireland offers more than just scenic views; it’s an experience that resonates with many.

Whether you’re exploring the vibrant streets of Dublin, discovering the history of Blarney Castle 🏰 or the Rock of Cashel, or admiring the architectural beauty of St. Patrick’s Cathedral ⛪️, you’ll find yourself drawn into the unique atmosphere of the country. Maybe you’d rather a whiskey tour or 2 or 3 🤭? That can be arranged with over 40 distillers on the island 🥃.

And, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention….that irresistible accent! What is top-of-mind for me is our favorite Irishman, Tommy Shelby, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Irish people. It’s about more than simply visiting landmarks. It’s about connecting with the essence of Ireland🇮🇪.

Must See Spots in Ireland

Dublin: Start your journey in Ireland’s vibrant capital. Visit Trinity College to see the famous Book of Kells, explore the cobblestone streets of Temple Bar, and raise a pint at the Guinness Storehouse.
Dublin is also home to world-class museums, beautiful parks like St. Stephen’s Green, and plenty of literary landmarks.

The Wild Atlantic Way: Stretching along Ireland’s west coast, this scenic route is a treasure trove of jaw-dropping landscapes. Don’t miss the iconic Cliffs of Moher, the colorful town of Dingle, or the rugged beauty of Connemara. Whether you drive or take a guided tour, the Wild Atlantic Way is a must.

Killarney and the Ring of Kerry: Base yourself in Killarney to explore the picturesque lakes, lush national park, and historic Ross Castle. Then, embark on the Ring of Kerry, a scenic drive that takes you past
quaint villages, dramatic coastlines, and ancient ruins.

Kilkenny: Known as Ireland’s medieval capital, Kilkenny is a charming City with narrow cobblestone streets and a vibrant arts scene. Visit Kilkenny Castle, stroll along the Medieval Mile, and enjoy a pint of
Smithwick’s at its original brewery.

When is it best to travel to Ireland?

If you’re wondering when to visit…

Ireland’s charm is undeniable year-round, but the seasons each bring their own magic. Here’s what to keep in mind when planning your trip:

🌸 Spring (March to May): The landscapes come alive with blooming flowers, lambs dot the countryside, and there’s a pleasant buzz in the air. March is perfect for experiencing St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, though it can still be chilly.

☀️ Summer (June to August): The most popular time to visit, with long days (hello, 10 p.m. sunsets!) and the warmest weather. This is festival season, with events like Galway Arts Festival and Dublin’s Bloomsday bringing the culture to life.

🍂 Autumn (September to November): Crisp air, vibrant fall foliage, and fewer crowds make autumn ideal. September offers a great blend of lingering summer warmth and quieter attractions.

❄️ Winter (December to February): Cozy pubs, festive Christmas markets, and fewer tourists make winter magical. While daylight hours are shorter, you’ll enjoy roaring fires and warm Irish hospitality.

If you’re wondering when to book this type of trip…

Ireland’s peak season (summer) and major events (like St. Patrick’s Day) fill up quickly, so you’ll need to plan 6–9 months in advance for the best accommodations and experiences. For more tailored experiences like private castle stays or guided tours along the Wild Atlantic Way, early planning is essential.
